My latest project with my incredibly talented sister, Teresa, was for a family wanting window coverings for their 4 sons’ rooms. The main concern was… too much light. With direct eastern and western exposure and poorly functioning or no window coverings at all, the boys were having trouble sleeping peacefully and their oldest son had threatened to paint his windows black. The only specific request was that we use blackout lining. No problem!

Each bedroom was freshly painted with bold colors and stripes – great inspiration for any designer! So we got to work. Teresa came up with these fabulous sketches and I went to work finding the perfect fabrics. The challenge for me was finding fabrics that matched the paint colors AND that would be good choices for drapes and Roman shades.

Then I made the design presentation boards with mini drapes and shades. They are so cute!! They have a practical use as well – giving the client a decent idea of how the fabric will look in the finished shape. They loved everything so I got to work…

(about 6 weeks later)

The install was a family affair. My brother Tyler is my installer. He is very manly, especially when he dons his tool belt, and he’s also really good at chatting with clients if they happen to watch us doing the install. That part isn’t so easy for me. I’m a pretty quiet person and chatting, especially while working, is difficult for me.  During this particular install “Snow” the cat was our only supervisor, sitting quietly and coolly watching us, and occasionally their youngest son who was more interested in sword fighting.

Here are Teresa and Tyler – Teresa documented the event in between tasks.  = )

Every install is different and you never know what unexpected glitches might arise in spite of the best planning. It’s definitely one of those situations where it’s best to come ready for the worst and hope for the best. The major glitch with this project installation was finding the drapes for one room were too long. I had made them when I was really sick and my head felt full of cotton. I should have been in bed resting instead of using my calculator, scissors and sewing machine. Oh well. Luckily, I came prepared with sewing machine and tools and the problem was fixable on the spot. Here I am altering the drapes on the spot and sewing faster than a speeding bullet…

You can’t even tell there was a problem! Here’s how everything turned out. Pretty daring huh? And so fun. Makes me want to redesign my son’s room now!

All 3 rooms now have flat panel drapes with hooks hanging from rings on the rods. The camo and stripe shades are flat Roman shades. The combinations of colors and fabrics are really fun and I hear the boys really love them, especially the oldest (camo room), who gave his mom the biggest hug. Sweet!

I just listened to a really inspiring speech by Adam Braun, founder of Pencils of Promise non-profit organization. They are dedicated to providing education to all children around the world, one child, one pencil at a time.

As a tribute to this great organization, I made my first Etsy treasury. It had fun doing it and will hopefully bring more attention to this great organization.
